Background of Student: Marie is a fourth year medical student at Touro University in Oakland California. Right now she is working in Highland hospital on a nephrology rotation. “What got me started in medicine is that I really believe that healthcare is a human right and everybody deserves a right to healthcare. It's very interesting right now in our nephrology service because what that means is that we’re making sure that everyone who comes in our door has access to hemodialysis. Hemodialysis, a lifesaving intervention for people with end stage renal disease, requires tremendous coordination to overcome socioeconomic barriers. Marie thanked us for asking her this question because she believes “it's important to remember what your values are especially when things get overwhelming. One of my core values is that healthcare is a human right so I really believe that all patients have access to this”.
